Bed = 床 [Chuáng]

A baby sleeps curled up inside a giant tire, using the hollow of the wheel as a cradle. Wherever you sleep is your 床.

床 (chuáng) means “bed.” The outer part, 广, is a roof shape, and inside is 木, wood.

Count beds with 张 (zhāng), the measure word for flat things: 一张床. To get up is 起床 (qǐchuáng), literally “rise from bed.”

good night = 晚安 [Wǎn'ān]

good night: 晚安 (Wǎn'ān)

good night = 晚安 [Wǎn'ān]

Two little peanuts lie side by side in their open shell and say good night. Then the shell closes over them like a blanket, and soon there is only snoring: 晚安.

晚安 (wǎn’ān) means “good night.” 晚 is evening and 安 means peace, so it wishes someone a peaceful night. Use it when someone is going to bed, not as a greeting.

To say “good evening” when you meet someone, use 晚上好 (wǎnshang hǎo). In the morning it is 早上好 (zǎoshang hǎo) or 早安 (zǎo’ān).

晚安,明天见。 — Wǎn’ān, míngtiān jiàn. — Good night, see you tomorrow.

我要睡觉了,晚安! — Wǒ yào shuìjiào le, wǎn’ān! — I’m going to bed. Good night!

Sleep = 睡觉 [shuì jiào]

Sleep: 睡觉 (shuì jiào)

Sleep = 睡觉 [shuì jiào]

Night falls, the moon smiles over the rooftop, and inside the house someone in bed is already snoring. Time to 睡觉.

睡觉 (shuìjiào) means “to sleep” or “to go to bed.” 睡 is to sleep, and 觉 here means a sleep. The same 觉 is read jué in 觉得 (juéde), to feel.

Because 睡觉 is a verb plus its object, words can go in between: 睡了一个好觉 (shuì le yí ge hǎo jiào), had a good sleep.

我十一点睡觉。 — Wǒ shíyī diǎn shuìjiào. — I go to bed at eleven.

孩子在睡觉。 — Háizi zài shuìjiào. — The child is asleep.
